Mastering the Self Tape Audition
Take your self tapes to the next level.
Providing an excellent and compelling self tape has to do with more than just your performance skills. Poor lighting, sound or on-camera skills can distract casting from what might otherwise be a wonderful audition.
In this 2-hour class we will go over technique, equipment, and best practices so that your self tapes will pop and show you off to your best advantage.
Structure:
- 20 minutes overview/teaching
- 10 minutes Q&A
- 90 minutes scene work
Everyone will work and serve as a reader.
Highlights:
Approaching the script – diving into script analysis will empower you to understand and work with your sides and monologues effectively so that you can deliver a nuanced performance that fits the piece.
Setting up your space at home – we’ll touch on the technical essentials of self-tape production, including camera setup, lighting, sound recording, framing, and editing.
Learning to self-direct – No one likes to watch themselves on camera at first, but it’s a skill you must develop if your self tapes are going to get better. We’ll go over how to develop the objectivity to view your performances with an eye evaluating and improving them based on the requirements of the scripts.
Practical application of the work – participants will be assigned sides ahead of time, so please upload your materials (Actors Access page, website, or email with updated photos and resumes included are all fine) to me by October 5th and sides will be emailed to you in the week before the class.
By the end of this workshop, you will possess a comprehensive toolkit to confidently tackle self-tape auditions and elevate your chances of “booking the room.”
Note: Open to 10 actors of all experience levels, from beginners to seasoned actors, and language abilities (Spanish or English). Sides provided will be in English.
