Stage Combat and Fisticuffs – HOLA Workshop
In this class we will explore how to use stage combat and movement to immediately heighten stakes in storytelling. A strong emphasis on acting while safely simulating physical combat on stage. Actors will move through a series of skills both offensive and defensive, technical and vocal and eventually add language, character, and circumstance. Culminating in shared scenes in an open rehearsal using the skills we’ve learned throughout our time together.
Workshop Outline:
Class 1 and 2: Combat Fundamentals
– This week we focus on the fundamental elements of stage combat.
– A focus on safety while building a shared langue within the class cohort.
– Learning beginner combat techniques as foundation for future advanced skills.
Class 3 and 4: Affecting our Scene Partner/Affecting an Audience
– Learning advanced combat skills with a focus on partnering.
– Mastering “sending,” and “receiving,” with attention to acting and stagecraft.
– Building a fight with a focus on character and storytelling.
Class 5 and 6: Why do we fight? How can combat make us better actors?
– This week we focus on adding language and circumstance to combat.
– Through scene work, we will explore our characters’ physical life and need to fight when words aren’t enough.
– Borrowing elements from Michael Chekhov, Feldenkrais, and View Points work, we will explore how combat can make our acting choices more front footed and dynamic.
Class 7 and 8: Combat Demo and Closing
– The week culminates in shared combat scenes using the principals we’ve learned.
– One-on-one instruction and private choreography.
– Putting it all together with an emphasis on strong acting and storytelling.
– Closing our time together with critical feedback and finals thoughts. This is where we celebrate our hard work and bow together one last time. OSS!
